The Cooperative Experience
Cooperative nursery schools
represent the joint efforts of parents and teachers to provide pre-school
children with the best possible experience for wholesome growth and
development.
Young children need a bridge
between home and the world. Cooperative nursery schools provide that
bridge through parent participation in the classroom as well as the
school. Together, parents and teachers work for the highest educational
standards.
Above all, every day, in
their own special ways, children will discover friends, school, the world… and
themselves. The experience means more when their families join in a
cooperative experience like the one we provide at Mayfair Nursery School.
What Your Child Will Find at Mayfair
Your child will be part of a
controlled group experience at Mayfair, learning to express feelings and
socialize with other children in a group situation. They can learn
cooperation and sharing as well as respecting the rights of others.
Mayfair also offers many
special opportunities: field trips, family and class picnics, parties, and
Winter Fun Day, as well as many others.
But most importantly, each
school day at Mayfair, your child will have hours of fun.
What You Will Find at Mayfair
You will get the rare
satisfaction and joy of participating in the learning experience alongside your
child. You can gain greater understanding of his or her wants, needs, and
capabilities. By sharing this common experience, you build a foundation
of closeness, trust, and understanding with your child.
It is this joint experience
that makes the cooperative nursery school so meaningful at Mayfair. You
are entering and participating in your child’s world.
You will also enjoy our
parent activities, such as orientation nights, informative parents’ meetings
(three times a year), class coffees, work days, and other family activities.
Our Staff and Organization
Our staff consists of one
professional, salaried teacher, supported by a part-time assistant teacher and
one or two helping parents. Each family is expected to act as helping
parents on a rotating basis throughout the school year (September-May).
The nursery school is
operated by its elected officers (President, 1st and 2nd
Vice Presidents, Corresponding and Recording Secretaries, Treasurer and
Registrar). The broad direction of the school is guided by Mayfair’s
Board of Trustees, a group of current and past officers, leading area
educators, and community representatives who are uniquely qualified to help
plan the school’s future.
Each parent is appointed to
serve as a member of one of the many committees that help support and maintain
the school. These include maintenance, housekeeping, grounds, scheduling,
fund raising, and many others. All parents are voting members of the cooperative.
Our Facilities
Mayfair Nursery School is
located at the corner of St. Anthony Lane and Glenridge Road in Glenville,
about a half mile from the intersection of Saratoga Road (Route 50) and
Glenridge Road. Our building was originally built as a nursery school and
is owned by the cooperative. It has a large open playroom and four
smaller side rooms, housing the kitchen, bathroom, teacher’s office, and
utilities.
Our 100’x100’ lot includes a
fenced-in play area containing a sandbox, swings, climbers, playhouse, and
other outdoor equipment, as well as a large open area for games, activities, or
just plain running around. A convenient parking area is located in front
of the building.
Classes
Mayfair Nursery School
offers four different class choices. The Tuesday/Friday classes are for
children who will be three by December 31st. Our two other
classes are designed for four- and five-year-olds.
Class limits have been set
to prevent any class from becoming so large that the children cannot receive the
individual attention they need and deserve.
Our Philosophy
“We want the Mayfair Nursery
School to:
- Offer numerous opportunities for investigation,
experimentation, problem-solving, contemplation, imagination, and
creativity:
- Lay the groundwork for social attitudes that
makes the cooperative effort possible;
- Give children the opportunity to learn to
respect the importance of others (sharing of materials, attention, ideas
and space):
- Give children opportunities to accept other
forms of authority, perhaps different than found in their own homes.
We believe through our deep
respect for the individual; our school emphasis on encouraging sound, critical,
creative thinking; and its promotion of cooperative efforts that we may make an
important contribution to each child’s growth and in turn play an important
part in the total educational scheme.”
